Nina's Story

Nina came to Omaha to start a new life and to escape her former city, where she experienced a lot of discrimination and had difficulties moving beyond her past life surrounding drugs and drug users. Nina is a transgender woman of color, having transitioned some years ago, and she is also HIV positive. Nina had no support network upon her move to Omaha and had very few resources to work through upon her initial arrival into town. Nina landed at a local area homeless shelter where she faced discrimination and wasn’t allowed to stay with the women, with whom she identifies.

Nina reached out to the Nebraska AIDS Project (NAP) for assistance in finding sustainable housing options while she worked toward a new start in her new city. NAP staff found resources that allowed Nina to spend her first few nights in the city at a safe and comforting hotel space while she worked toward overcoming her past and moving toward her bright future. NAP was also able to refer Nina to a network of healthcare providers who could ensure that she remained in good health.

Nina reports that she has now become established in Omaha and enjoys the support system that NAP helped give her access to. She is now self-reliant, adherent to regular medical care and has found a new lease on life.
