Bridget’s Story

I was the second born in my family, and I think from day one they knew I was different from my older brother. My parents spent the first three years of my life continually taking me to different doctors in search of a diagnosis. I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis on April Fools Day, but sadly it was not a joke. Five years later, when I turned nine, my little sister was born with this disease as well. After my diagnosis my childhood was filled with doctors appointments, breathing treatments, and pills. When I was in fifth grade I underwent surgery to get a feeding tube placed in my stomach. After gaining weight, I was able to get my tube removed. After a pretty “normal” high school years I went off to college at Nebraska Methodist College. I graduated with my degree in Respiratory Care and moved back to my home town of Kearney. I began working the night shift as a Respiratory Therapist. Nightshift took a huge toll on my health. I began getting hospitalized about every 6 months. Finally,  I was able to get started on Trikafta.

These days life looks a little different. I am currently the outpatient respiratory therapist at Kearney Regional Medical Center. I am engaged to my amazing fiancé, Brian. Together we have a beautiful six month old daughter Olive, who keeps us on our toes. We enjoy taking our golden retriever Paisley for walks, cooking, and playing board games with friends.
